I know the pain of not knowing, and find joy in carefully helping others discover their authentic “swing” — that which the heart already knows.
I was blessed in diverse pursuits growing up—academics, sport, music, drama—and at 17, after rigorous testing, I was awarded a Royal Air Force summer scholarship, learning to fly solo within eight hours. I also played U18 rugby for Ireland alongside peers who would go on to reach the sport’s summits.
I felt torn over my professional calling, and my reading of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami’s books led me to a monastic temple life, where I embraced spiritual practice and the sharing of wisdom. I later returned to university and graduated from SOAS with first-class honours in Religion, a study that deepened my ability to connect spiritual wisdom with academic insight.
After teacher training, I travelled to India to study, teach, live simply, and immerse myself in sacred places, spending a decade pursuing transcendence in a minimalist, tropical environment. On my return to the British Isles, I served as a secondary-school Department Head, mentoring staff and students.
Now living in the UK with my young family, I coach with the same blend of discipline, creativity, and spiritual insight that has shaped my own journey. Sometimes I wonder what life might have been like as an Olympian, a Royal Marine, or a debonair actor—but I wouldn’t swap the knowledge and realisations I’ve received for all the tea in China.

Career choices are often influenced by the beliefs we hold about ourselves, the messages we’ve received from family or friends, and our own past experiences.
Some people find a career they love, while others may experience doubt about which studies or job to pursue, or feel the need for a change in their current career. I work with this latter group, helping them explore the influences shaping their choices, uncover their true nature, and clarify a calling that feels meaningful and aligned with who they are.
As a therapist, I also support people in navigating life’s unexpected turns, transforming stress into strength so they can move forward with calm, clarity, and confidence and remove any obstacles that might hold them back from a career aligned with their true nature.

Apparently Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid”. Regardless of whether Einstein said this or not, its message is true. We all have an innate gift and potential for genius born of our individual psychology (dharma) that if understood and nourished can contribute to genuine meaning for ourselves and society. However, due to the various fallacies of modern society and education people are often disconnected from their essential purpose and meaning (dharma) and are thus experience nuances of life dissatisfaction, boredom, and pain.
Having been fascinated with the topic of meaning, purpose, and authentic life fulfillment since my childhood I decided to embark on the spiritual path of joining a monastery at the age of 19. After years of monastic training and amazing life experiences I decided that it was time for me to marry and thus find a profession. Having tried different careers from carpentry, to business entrepreneurship, to working with NGO’s, I realised that those professions did not completely align with my unique purpose. I always wanted to use what I learned as a monk to help others understand themselves. To guide others in finding purpose, wisdom, and meaning within their own lives. Thus, I decided to go to university and study counselling at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in New Zealand.
Having graduated, my wife and I now live near Wellington, where I work with a small team of counsellors, contracted by the NZ Government, to work with a variety of clients in both an individual and group context. My training in ‘Career Dharma’ has certainly given deeper insight and dynamism to my practice/work and thus I am looking forward serving you in understanding your own dharma!

Helping others discover the career path true to their own nature is my passion.
Growing up in a community in which children received heavy family and societal pressure to choose careers incompatible with their own natures, I had the unique opportunity to see how that impacted those individuals, their families, and even their communities in the decades that followed. Witnessing that long term harm and lost potential, as well as the contrasting geysers of energy and fulfillment that erupted when individuals chose to work true to their own calling fueled my enthusiasm to help others establish careers in line with their own natures.
I studied Communication while at school, as well as Dispute Resolution with a Mediation emphasis. Following my graduation I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as an Assault Amphibian Crewman. Throughout my childhood, my studies, and all the experiences that have followed, I have found life is rejuvenating and colorful when individuals make the empowering decision to work according to their own innate natures. I look forward to walking with you on this journey and watching you succeed.

The Career Dharma consultation has provided me with increased clarity and direction as well as next steps to take in my career.
I came to the session with confusion between two fields which was cleared up by questions to understand my motivations.
My overall understanding has improved about how I can use my different natural propensities and still keep the essence of the field which I am in.
I would highly recommend career dharma coaching to anyone who needs guidance on their path – the insights from both coaches was invaluable.

Before coaching with Dr. Urmila Edith Best, I was uncertain about what career path would suit me and how I could meaningfully contribute to society. I knew I wanted a fulfilling career that would also have a positive impact on others, but my own attempts to find clarity left me feeling stuck. Through Dr. Best’s guidance I was able to uncover my true nature. Dr. Best guided me with compassion and insight, asking the right questions that helped me to think deeper. I now have a clear sense of where I fit in and how I can work in a way that feels natural and rewarding. Her support has been life-changing for me!

Yesterday, I attended the Bhakti retreat led by Keshava Swami here in Amsterdam. Naturally, the topic of dharma came up. He shared the phrase Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah (If you protect Dharma, then Dharma will protect you), and of course, it immediately reminded me of the Career Dharma course. What I understood is this: When you follow your dharma, things begin to align more naturally. Life feels more in flow, and everything starts to fall into place. One simply has to take that leap of faith—whether it’s a big or small step forward.

A Life-Changing Read That Reframes Career, Purpose, and Self-Understanding
At the peak of my career – working at a Magic Circle law firm, living a life far beyond what I’d once dreamed – I should have felt fulfilled. Instead, my high salary felt like the price of my soul. I dreaded Mondays, lived only for weekends and holidays, and ultimately burned out. I had to walk away.
Then I came across Career Dharma, and it transformed everything. This book didn’t just answer questions about career direction – it answered deeper questions about life, purpose, and identity. It helped me understand that the traits I once felt guilty or insecure about weren’t flaws, but signals pointing me toward my unique path of service and fulfillment.
Career Dharma gave me language and perspective to embrace who I am and how I can contribute meaningfully to the world. I’ve shared its insights with friends and family, and the impact has been just as profound for them.
Looking back, I often say I went through a quarter-life crisis – and this was the book that helped me through it. Read it with an open mind, and it’s almost impossible for it not to shift the way you see yourself, your career, and the world around you.
Roman
“What’s my purpose? Am I meant for something more than my current job? Can I really become anything I want in life?”
With so many voices and opinions on how to find meaning and purpose, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lost. These and more were some of the questions weighing heavily on me when I first approached Urmila.
During our session, she expertly guided me and introduced me to the concept of four distinct fields—deeply rooted within human history and each person’s psychophysical nature. She explained how each field carries its own values and moral compass, and why trying to operate in more than one can create inner conflict and challenges.
I was struck by her insight that much of the challenges and corruption we see in the world today stems from people working outside their true field—and how realignment could radically shift this for the better.
Urmila Edith Best draws her teachings from 5,000-year-old sacred wisdom texts, and the principles she shares have stood the test of time across millennia. This isn’t just another trendy “find-your-purpose” framework. It’s timeless wisdom that is deeply rooted in human history and reaches to the very core of one’s self.
If you’re questioning whether you’re meant for more—if you’ve searched through countless sources and still feel unsure—trust me, this session will offer insights you won’t find anywhere else. It will give you a deeper understanding of yourself and a clear, grounded direction.
After our session, I walked away with profound clarity, a new-found sense of purpose, and the empowering realization that finding my path isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s a responsibility I carry for myself, for those close to me, and for creating a more harmonious society.

“Having dedicated the past 15 years to raising my children, I had lost touch with what I truly wanted for myself. I loved being there to care for them daily – deeply involved in their learning and their interests, so I have no regrets, but I was so focused on my children that when the time came for me to pursue something outside of the home, I felt confused about exactly what that would look like. I tried a couple of jobs that met some of our practical needs, but I didn’t feel satisfied. I didn’t want to struggle along, working hard for a little money – just trying to get by and not actually feeling any sense of fulfillment. Also, being out of the workforce for such a long time, I lacked the confidence and up-to-date skills to do the type of work I might find enlivening.
I attended a talk about the book “Career Dharma” by Urmila Edith Best and Ruchira S. Datta, and knew that I wanted to choose a path that was right for me, so I bought the book and reached out to Urmila/Edith Best for a consultation to help me clarify exactly what that might be.
In our first session, we explored what I was looking for and why, we identified what lights me up – and what doesn’t. I was given some homework to help me shape a clearer picture of what I really want and what kind of work would genuinely suit me.
Interestingly, I discovered that some things I thought were career options were actually passions I want to keep separate from work – activities I do purely for joy, without turning them into obligations. I’ve now built regular time into my week to enjoy those things on their own terms.
I also began to reflect on other areas I hadn’t previously considered and realized that a lack of confidence – due to not yet having the necessary skills – was what had been holding me back from exploring them.
By the end of our second session, the confusion had been replaced with excitement. I now feel enthusiastic and ready to pursue a new career path – one that feels meaningful and allows me to make a valuable contribution. I feel confident about gaining the education and training I need and, remarkably, many practical details have begun to fall into place. It’s as if, now that I’m consciously working toward being in the right place, everything else is aligning naturally.”
Shreya
Coming into this coaching session I had already done a lot of prior research work into ‘dharma’, what the classifications of different dharmas are in the Vedas and I had many preconceived notions. This, of course, resulted in a copious amount of confusion!
Having already chosen my career, which was quite niche, I wondered what I could get out of the coaching. Yet, suddenly, I found a clearer direction when it comes to what I should do further in my career as well as other side ventures. As a dentist, the options can seem limited, like you have already chosen your dharma, but actually even within a niche career, further direction can be found. This sense of purpose and working in a way that makes sure I am feeling fulfilled in my career, actually helps me grow into even further specialisation within my job.
Following the first coaching session I felt the doubts clearing away. We delved into my childhood habits, I was given many analogies and hypothetical scenarios to help better understand where my true proclivities lie. I was then given exercises acting on what we found and logging how it feels. It started to not only impact my job but my hobbies and volunteering activities. My purpose started to become streamlined and I better understood my decisions, the reasoning behind them.
I would reccomend this coaching even to those who have established themselves in a career, as even when we have set on a path, we need lights to see our journey clearly and perhaps some side roads may be discovered in the illumination.

My session with Urmila was eye opening. She guided me through a thoughtful process that helped me understand more deeply what I’m naturally suited for, not just based on my skills but also my nature. I appreciated how she asked deep, reflective questions and walked me through an imaginative five-year journey. The exercises helped me explore different scenarios, and by the end of it, I felt much lighter and more grounded. What had felt like confusion started to shift into clarity, and we even landed on some tangible options. I’m really grateful for her support and insight.
Aditya Dave
Reflecting on Urmila’s talk about career dharma gave me a framework to better understand and validate my own needs in work. It helped me see which fields align with my nature, in contrast to the many voices from family nudging me toward careers that didn’t resonate with who I am. Her advice during a one-on-one call was invaluable in guiding my decision-making for my first job. She helped me identify my priorities and explore how I can bring more ethical alignment and meaning into my work in the future.
Prema
I want to thank Urmila/Dr Edith Best from the bottom of my heart for the massive effort she has put in to extensively researching the dharmic concept of working according to ones nature and how modern careers fit into the dharmic model. It’s a real revolution! I was stuck in a rut with a big mortgage and a new baby dreading the thought of returning to my previous job. Not that I don’t want to work but I felt that career was sucking the life out me. Now I know that while there was nothing wrong with the job itself, it just wasn’t compatible with an intrinsic part of me.
During my consultation with Urmila/Dr Edith Best we identified types of work to suit my nature, that I find satisfying and where I’m making a meaningful contribution, and we made plans for the next steps which gave me great confidence. We also identified a recurring theme of things I’m passionate about, that nourish me and bring me joy and I have set aside a small amount of time daily to do this.
I feel very grateful for her time and wisdom.

I came to Urmila for coaching at a moment when I was struggling to integrate my working life with my desire to deepen spiritually. In part because of things I had heard from others and in part because of my own polarized thinking, I had started to feel that to be truly spiritual, I had to give up my career, even though I find my work fulfilling and deeply meaningful. I felt that to grow spiritually I had to move into an asrama, even though I knew that was not a viable option for me at this stage of life. So this internal cul-de-sac had led to a certain degree of paralysis in both my working life and in my spiritual life.
However, in one dynamic and truly enlightening 90 minute session with Urmila, I was able to recognize that the either-or mentality I had internalized was based on an inaccurate understanding of work and spirituality.
In our session, I was amazed by the careful way Urmila listened to my situation, and empathetically understood the feelings associated with it, while still staying focused on outcomes and moving forward practically. Using her Career Dharma framework and its core heuristics, she was able to help me reframe my quandaries about work and spirituality in a holistic way that helped me to move past the dualisms that had me stuck.
Now, I understand that my working life, rather than an impediment to spirituality, can actually be a concrete arena to practice spiritual principles and grow in service. I’m grateful to the newfound sense of clarity and direction that I have from working with Urmila. And I would highly recommend anyone else finding themselves in a similar predicament to avail themselves of her expert, wise, and compassionate coaching.

I’m very grateful and stoked that I got the opportunity to have a coaching session with Urmila Prabhvi. She helped me to understand my field of work very quickly and gave me holistic advice on what changes I can make to start pursuing a career in my field.
Before our coaching session I was very confused and uncertain about which direction to go and after just 30 minutes with Urmila I had a lot of clarity and felt certain that I can make the necessary steps forward.
Urmila is a very warm and caring person with the experience, knowledge and farsight to guide anyone in any life situation on how to make their work satisfying for the individual, valuable for humanity and connect their career spiritually to satisfy the souls deepest needs.
Thank you very much Urmila for your time and guidance!

I felt supported in understanding my career focus and aligning it with my true nature and values. The session brought a direction, allowing me to prioritize what really matters and set meaningful goals for the future. I’m deeply grateful for the insights and guidance I received. Leva Zdanovica

My career Dharma session with Urmila was truly transformative. She gently guided me to discover my “Ideas” nature, helping me understand my natural inclination toward knowledge and wisdom while also clarifying the ethical dilemmas I was facing in my workplace. Before the session, I felt torn between pursuing a path in the “ideas” realm or serving in a “government” role, unsure of where I truly belonged.
Through her insightful guidance, Urmila helped me see that it is possible to have an “Ideas” nature while still desiring to support the “Government” realm. This understanding gave me a profound sense of clarity and direction, allowing me to embrace my strengths and make career decisions with greater confidence.
I am deeply grateful for her wisdom, compassion, and the practical clarity she brought to a very confusing time in my life. Her guidance has given me both inner peace and actionable steps toward my career path.

Sometimes we ́re quick to declare preference for one industry or one field or are determined (or forced!) to follow in our parents ’ footsteps, but this can lead to poor quality of life, not just for us, but those around us. Working with the principles of dharma, we can live a rewarding life while also enriching those around us… [Career Dharma] presents a guidance system to address the challenges we face in today ́s world.

I was finding it difficult to know the work that best suited my purpose and nature. I wasn’t sure what I could possibly do to best help others. In a lot of ways there were a list of options but not a clear indication of what to focus on.
I joined the Career Dharma seminar by Urmila Edith Best and I discovered the base puzzle pieces I had to work with. From that I was provided the lines of work that best suited me.
Knowing this I specially sought out such opportunities. Upon doing so I found that time was flying by. I didn’t want to stop! The work has been enlivening and encouraging. Now I feel I have clear indications as to how I can meaningful contribute to others, the world and even myself through my career.

Although I graduated from an excellent university and found success in my “dream career,” I got burned out after a decade and realized that I didn’t know how to contribute to the world in a healthy way.
I attended the Career Dharma seminar and was able to clearly identify the field of work most appropriate for my nature, which showed me how I’m best able to help society and what kinds of professions I can choose from to do that.
Understanding which principles of action and occupations are incompatible with my nature — and why — really made me see my past work experience in a new light and erased a lot of regret and self – judgment.
Moving forward, I think I’ll be better able to choose career opportunities that bring fulfillment to my life and help me have the kind of positive impact on the world that I’ve always hoped for.
Shyamala Kishori
I attended the Career Dharma workshop with Dr. Edith Best and was amazed at how quickly she helped me pinpoint my nature and inclinations. I learned that by focusing on my dharma, I can free up a lot of precious time and energy, and be of better service to the world. The workshop helped me understand and accept my strengths and limitations, which in turn helps me to be more accepting of others.

Urmila is completely masterful in putting together models that actually show the true principles behind Dharma and how to apply it in your life in a practical way.

I gained many insights into better understanding others’ natures which will help me to better guide my mentees.

Thank you so much for your time and the knowledge you share! After your course on Career Dharma (in Florida) I was able to confirm my feelings that I am at the right place (career wise). But it took me 35 years to get there (trying, learning, getting disappointed, trying again). It could happen much sooner and I could get the appropriate degree (not the one that was “popular” at that time)

I am feeling very light after getting clarity on my dharma and I know what I am supposed to do now in my career. Also, now I am able to make sense of the conflicts that I often get into because most of the times it is crossing of dharmas with the other person. Not just career but overall communication and life wise knowing my dharma is so helpful. Very grateful to you.

Recently, Urmila visited us in Wellington, New Zealand, to deliver the Career Dharma coaching course. I felt I gained a lot from it. I am impressed by the structure of the system she has developed. It’s incredibly robust, very well researched, and presented in a thoughtful and modern context while still remaining faithful to the essence of the Bhagavad-gītā as it is.
One of the things that helped me the most was how the course moved me away from the stereotypes I had developed about the different natures. Learning from the Gītā, I had certain fixed ideas, but Urmila explained everything in such a clear, contemporary, and relatable way that it really opened my understanding.
The way Urmila answered everyone’s questions was precise, compassionate, and clearly backed by deep study and experience. You can see how thoroughly the system has been developed and how much care has gone into it.
I genuinely feel the Career Dharma framework is extremely valuable not just for bhakti practitioners, but also for people in general. It’s a powerful tool for personal growth and a wonderful avenue for outreach as well.
I was also very touched by Urmila’s personalism. She puts her whole heart into this service. It’s something she truly lives and that authenticity comes through so strongly. I am very grateful for the opportunity to learn from her.
Thank you 🙏🏽
